I am running to bring a new style of leadership to city hall: based on responsiveness and the active cultivation of citizen problem-solvers. My vision for Saint Paul is one in which every single resident is engaged in making the city a better place to live.
By running with the Green Party I also hope to build a stronger voice for progressive issues in city politics, and ranked choice voting will allow citizens to vote for those candidates without any fear.
Jim Ivey: 1) The lack of support for small, locally-owned businesses. City development and planning decisions continue to be focused on luring large one-time investments, instead of building a sustainable economy that attracts and recirculates revenue within Saint Paul.
2) The lack of affordable, healthy food for neighborhoods. Saint Paul has a number of "food deserts", and we should be rebuilding our local food infrastructure. That includes devoting unused greenspace to urban agriculture, investing in local food processing resources, and creating a city-wide food distribution network through existing stores and additional co-ops/markets.
3) The lack of support for district councils and neighborhood community groups. District councils serve a critical role in St. Paul neighborhoods, but they are underfunded and ignored by their elected representatives. They need the resources required to attract and retain excellent staff, and a stronger voice representing them at the city council.

Jim Ivey: My primary focus would be to strengthen the local economy with a city-wide plan to invest in infrastructure and services that benefit small, locally-owned businesses. Numerous studies have shown that those types of businesses create a much larger return-on-investment, creating living-wage jobs for local residents and keeping retail and commercial dollars in the local economy.
Saint Paul also has a unique role in Minnesota of providing land and infrastructure for state and county government. Because this property is tax exempt, it reduces the overall tax base of the city and shifts the burden to local businesses and residents. If the state is going to continue taking significant tax revenue from the city of Saint Paul, but will no longer return it in the form of local government aid, then I think we should take another look at that relationship and find ways for Saint Paul to be directly compensated for that loss in potential property tax revenue.

Cynthia Schanno: I am running for City Council because I believe it is in the City best interest to vote in change, to include, new representation who will offer a fresh approach when addressing the issues faced by Saint Paul. As one who believes elected officials are “civil servants” of the people, our current council appears to be more interested in political aspirations and retirement plans than they are in the long-term stability of Saint Paul. As a city, we can no longer afford this type of self serving governing and I believe on behalf of the citizens of Saint Paul, it is time our elected official put the city and the citizen of Saint Paul first by first. Our city’s current economic challenges and deteriorating services where created by the decisions made by current council members; it is time for change, it is time for new representation, and it is time for a new direction for Saint Paul.
Cynthia Schanno: I see one of the most pressing issues for the citizens of Ward 2 is the continued loss of property values, while real estate taxes continue to rise. As a representative of Ward 2 I will advocate for an immediate freeze on real estate taxes and I would advocate for an aggressive economic business development plan to fill vacate building and commercial space throughout the ward.
Cynthia Schanno: To offset the loss of LGA the priority should be to prioritize, reduce spending, eliminate waste, and NOT raise taxes. To accomplish this the City must adjust its spending as both businesses and individuals have already done in recent years. To achieve the most impact in the quickest amount of time with the least amount of dollars spent, the following items should be implemented and including: - A citywide audit to identify expensed that can be eliminated and/or dramatically reduced in the area of redundant services, discretionary spending, inefficient programs, and wasteful spending. Until this effort is completed, a citywide spending freeze should be implemented. - Consolidate, privatize, and eliminating overlapping and non-essential services. - Implement a minimum two year pay freeze for current city employees and contractors. - Amend ALL pay and benefit packages for current, retired, and new hires.
